Care Guide: Things you're doing wrong right now with your jewelry

There are some common mistakes almost everyone is making with their jewelry, right now. Read this quick guide to find out which ones you know, and don't know yet.

WASH

Let's face it, most of us don't clean our jewelry.  We (hopefully) take it off at the end of the day and leave it in our favorite jewelry tray. And if you're not part of the 95% of people never cleaning them, you might be using harsh chemicals that can strip your metals, cause a reaction on our skin, or even harm your stones!

What can you do?

The best recommended cleaning method is to use a little mild soap, our favorite is Dawn Dish Soap, and gently wash your jewelry.  You can even use a soft toothbrush to scrub away any built up lotions, debris, or even dead skin (yuk!). Anything more than this is too much.

Also getting regular cleanings from your personal jeweler, no more than twice a year, is recommended for longevity of your heirlooms

SLEEP

We all have that pair of every studs or meaningful piece that we never take off, we are proud to boast the we even sleep with them on! Never, and I mean never, is this a good idea.  To protect your jewelry, removing every night is a must. Besides the added pressure that could cause breakage, it also builds up a lot of skin oils and dead skin cells that dull your piece.

SHOWER

Lastly, please remove your jewelry when taking a shower. This goes right back to trapping soaps and oils that can be harmful to your jewelry, not to mention the unforeseen shock of watching an earring go down the drain!

How many of these are you guilty of? Even as a jeweler, I catch myself doing each of these from time to time.
